The Mandelbulb

Take a look at this 3D rendering of Mandelbrot set, slightly modified to work in 3D spherical coordinates instead of 2D polar.

The story start around 20 years ago with a guy named Rudy Rucker, an American mathematician, computer scientist and science fiction author (and in fact one of the founders of the cyberpunk science-fiction movement). Back then of course, the hardware was barely up to the task of rendering the 2D Mandelbrot, let alone the 3D version – which would require billions of calculations to see the results, making research in the area a painstaking process to say the least.

So the idea slumbered for 20 years until around 2007 when the researcher, Daniel White, independently pictured the same concept and published the formula for the first time in November 2007 at the fractalforums.com web site. The basic idea is that instead of rotating around a circle (complex multiplication), as in the normal 2D Mandelbrot, we rotate around phi and theta in 3 dimensional spherical coordinates (see here for details). In theory, this could theoretically produce our amazing 3D Mandelbrot, but there was some mathematical problems to be solved. Then the work of other fractal explorers and mathematicians, like Paul Nylander and David Makin, gave life to the Mandelbulb, the 3D version of Mandelbrot set.

Piano Migrations Installation

The inside of an old upright piano, rescued from destruction, is transformed into a kinetic sound sculpture. Video projections move across the surface of the piano strings, triggering small machines to twitch and flutter causing the strings to resonate. The video is visually akin to a musical score or piano roll, and this installation can also become the site for a live performance.
The video is analysed by a MaxMSP patch which divides the screen into a 5×5 grid to correspond to the motors and solenoids which are also arranged in a 5×5 grid on the piano. Movement or any change sensed in the video triggers a device in the corresponding square of the grid – the result is that the fluttering and movement of a bird triggers a device closest to it on the piano.

Sun Boxes

Sun Boxes is a sound installation created by Craig Colorusso.

It’s comprised of twenty speakers operating independently each powered by solar panels. There is a different guitar sample in each box all playing together making the composition. The guitar samples are all of different lengths so the whole piece keeps evolving.

Participants are encouraged to walk amongst the speakers. It sounds different inside of the array.  There is a different sense of space inside. Certain speakers will be closer and louder therefore the piece will sound different to different people in different positions throughout the array. Creating a unique experience for everyone.

There are no batteries involved. The Sun Boxes are reliant on the sun. When the sun sets the music stops. The piece changes as the length of the day changes making the participants aware of the cycle of the day.

It’s a very interesting idea. I would like to know how powerful each speaker is. 20 Watt? 50? or more?

Good for Easter day, the virtual tour of Sistine Chapel, a flash panorama where you can move in clicking two buttons on the lower left or moving the mouse and the wheel (click image to enlarge).

Tokyo/Glow

Written and directed by Jonathan Bensimon and produced by Jonas Bell Pasht, Tokyo/Glow follows the nighttime journey of an illuminated man from a crosswalk sign as he embarks on an adventure through the streets of Tokyo. Shot on location throughout Tokyo using thousands of individual digital stills, the short film features original music by indie rock band Kidstreet, who recently signed with Nettwerk Records and will be releasing their debut album worldwide in 2010.

To achieve the striking effect of the illuminated man, an original light suit was constructed using hundreds of feet of high-voltage LED rope lights and a translucent nylon outer shell. Michael Lambermont, executive producer at Alter Ego in Toronto, oversaw the effects-heavy post-production process, which included weeks of extensive rotoscoping and compositing in the facility’s two Flame suites, plus a final colour grade, once the effects were complete. Geoff Ashenhurst, editor at Stealing Time, was charged with bringing the thousands of digital stills to life with director Bensimon.
